Examples of cyanotype in surface design in different felting scenarios.
Cyanotype dripped and brushed on paper felt
Splashed and flicked cyanotype on silk
Cyanotype dripped and brushed unevenly on paper felt
Patchy blue distribution on white felt with embedded leaf skeletons
Rare good result of cyanotype on white wool. Note wool turns yellowish.
Common weak result on white wool - very pale with yellowing lght area where the objects were
Paper with walnut leaves, cyanotype then felted.
Some objects used to create cyanotypes - tea leaves, inflorescence of a dawn redwood in early spring, leaves simple and pinnate with interesting shapes and not too big, wooden shapes, seeds of the Kentucky Coffee tree, dried beans…go crazy with man-made objects too.
Same immge on paper after stripping the blue by washing in soda ash. then adding another cyanotype treatment to the white areas followed by more stripping. Kozo paper felt then embroidered and molded into a mini topography. The paper held up to at least 5 washings during felting, cyanotyping and removal of cyanotype. Remarkable.
Topography of wetlands created by uneven application of cyanotype to paper felt surface. White wool underneath. Dirtied up the white patches with a diluted e-sumi ink rub.
Stitching with thick thread on paper felt before cyanotype
